Rachel Ruysch

Rachel Ruysch (1664-175) was a still life master from Amsterdam during the Golden Age. I studied a lot of her work in the Dutch Golden Age class I took at State. I can't wait to see a preview of her stuff when I go to the exhibit the the De Young and even MORE pieces when we go to Amsterdam.

Still life honestly doesn't do too much for me as far as my aesthetics go. I'm mostly into abstract stuff, but if you look at the incredible amount of detail, I feel speechless.

Judith Leyster was another woman artist of the Dutch Golden Age who kicks just as much ass are Ruysch, Rembrandt and the Hals brothers.

Abstract Wednesday

I'm starting to feel like my photo an hour challenge doesn't make sense for Wednesdays. I'm usually at school for the first part of the day and there's nothing really interesting going on there (unless I take pictures of my notes or the back of peoples heads).

The best thing about Wednesdays is that I've been doing happy hour with my lady friends for the past couple of weeks. Last night I went to a friend's house and we made delicious pizza from scratch. Ahhh it was so good! Paired it with BBQ and honey mustard chicken wings from Wing Wings in Lower Haight and some German beer.

Speaking of German....my boyfriend and I are going on a vacation together in July. This will be my first trip to Europe ever!  We're starting off in Amsterdam, then heading to Berlin to visit a friend. He will be staying in Germany for the next 3 weeks while on tour with his band. I'm so excited, summer can't come soon enough!

White Elephant Sale

photo from the SF Chronicle

It was so much fun going to the White Elephant Sale in Oakland. My work sent me and another co-worker to go and buy art for the gallery. I felt honored that my bosses respect my taste enough to send me off to purchase things for them. I haven't been at work to see their reactions about the 20 pieces I picked out for them but I did get a sweet text. They said they were impressed and that I did a fantastic job! Yessss!

I also felt great when my co-worker and I were walking around the sale with stacked paintings under our arms. People kept complimenting us on the pieces we found, and some of them tried to trade with us. This made me feel confident about my choices. And, if the people at the W.E.S liked my pieces, then our clients will too. This was also the first time people (outside of my family) to say "You must work in the art business!". Eeeeek! I do! Finally!

The whole thing was kind of wild because it was the very last day of the sale. Luckily, that meant everything was half off so we were able to buy much more. Sweet! i was even able to find a nice painting for myself. Actually, a lot of the pieces I picked out for the gallery I want for myself but....I don't know what to do about it. I just wish I knew about it sooner so I could have gone during the Preview Sale, though. Oh well, maybe next year!

pooped

Wow! This week was so busy and stressful. I'm not even in my midterm period at school yet and I have been doing so much studying lately. I had my first biology exam on Wednesday. It was probably my first bio test since high school, so I kind of freaked out.

We have also been working on a lot of projects at the gallery. Since the new year, I have been multitasking to the max on several artist collections, new PR responsibilities and the usual art gallery tasks. By the time I get home from work, I'm pooped. The only thing that keeps me going is coffee (obviously), working on personal art projects and being soooo close to graduating. I'm sure my friends who are already doing the 9-5 work thing would roll their eyes when I say...I can't wait to be done with school and working full time!

Anyway, I've been doing a lot of fun coloring in my GBB coloring book zine, drawing things for the next zine and I just started a Mondrian tribute project! I'm working on a collage that is inspired by Mondrian's "Composition C"and the various "composition" pieces. My boss actually did a few versions himself! They will probably be on my Pinterest soon!

Some cool Mondrian tributes:

PS, has anyone tried the Mondrian cake the the SF MOMA? I want to!
